..and also that they're really really pretty! I miss you girls.

In other news:
Woke up very leisurely with the hubby, went for a run, and headed to Arcata...
Farmers market was really awesome! I picked up a whole bunch of the "Weekly Veggie" and I can't wait to get started.
Our afternoon ended with sunshine, refreshments, puppies, and hangout time with my lovely friend R.
Hope you're all enjoying the weekend so far.

Another fabulous painting from Janet Hill.

What a weekend.
Full of ups and downs, and as always I'm left to ponder, pick apart, and over analyze my behavior in the negative areas.
I strongly dislike being a grump, so when this happens (and it does) I try to take a good look at myself and the situation, and  move forward with the proper tools to avoid getting into the same unattractive, and unhealthy position again. I really began practicing this mindset after reading "The Art of Happiness", and I have to say that it's hugely impacted my life, my relationships, the health of my marriage, and just the all around quality of my every day.

So with that...
We had a wonderful Saturday, until the bag that carried my favorite vintage cookbook, my little sisters new "Dexter" book, and my very new and ONLY camera got submerged in the river.
I was pretty beside myself after this, and naturally it put a bit of a damper on the day trip to the river
I'm sad, and a little distraught at the fact that we might not have a camera for a little while. At the moment it's sitting on top of our dehumidifier, and we're hoping by some random miracle of science that all of the moisture will be drawn from the camera and it will function properly after a few more days of "dehumidifying".

Thankfully I have a few recipes with pictures already uploaded that will tide me over until we figure out our camera situation.

...If I keep creating amazing raw food like this...

[Zucchini/Carrot "Spaghetti" and No-meat balls w/ creamy Marinara, topped with Sunflower Parm]

Then maybe, just maybe, I can coax [profile] are_black_stars to come and visit meeeee!!

This weekend has been SO lovely.
Packed full of travel, adventures, laughter, nerdieness, and most importantly really-really good food!!

Sorry for the teaser picture...I promise to update tomorrow with more yummy food, and the recipes for everything.
sarahfae: (dear diary)

In spite of not being able to run very much over the last week (still doing loads of pilates), and feeling discouraged about it...when I woke up this morning and carried myself into the bathroom (as I always do right after I wake up). Rubbing my eyes, putting my glasses on, staring in the mirror I could see the slight formation of my abs...for the first time in a long while I could actually see my abs!

"Hello old friends. Welcome back. I promise to treat you better this time around."

I'm one and a half inches away from my goal waste line of 27", and in the last few months (since taking up running) I've managed to shave off somewhere around 10-13 inches from my body every month. I can almost fit comfortably into my old size 6 gap jeans (they're just a bit to snug, and my old levis that I couldn't get into three months ago are getting pretty loose already.

I get frustrated with the seemingly slow pace of things, but the truth is that what I've been doing IS working, and the results are there --- I just have to remember to acknowledge it more often and not be so damn hard on myself. I've never been the type of person who looses weight easily, and actually doing it in a very healthy way for the first time in my life is so rewarding. I know the long term effects of the choices I'm making in my life are already showing themselves in small ways - and I'm thankful for this.

Small things are often easy to overlook, but when noticed (and appreciated) they can certainly influence your day in a wonderful way.

I'm stealing my sister for the weekend and heading up to Brookings (with Lucy in tow) for a little girlie bonding time. D is more than supportive of this, and I'm excited to see what sort of adventures we'll find. There will be lots of creative food pictures - I promise!

Another weekend has come and gone.
We managed to enjoy ourselves quite a bit, and on Sunday the reward for lots of gardening and yardwork was a barbeque with a couple of good friends. After filling our tummys with really good food, we all Hula-Hooped and proceeded to laugh at ourselves until most of the calories were burnt off. Wonderful fun!

The weather has been so beautiful, and since this is our first "real" house, with a big (fully fenced in) back yard, I just can't seem to get enough of being outside --- and neither can Lucy.
Cows, Lucy, and food...this-a-way... )

Things I'm looking forward to this Summer:

- A fully landscaped backyard (it's in progress right now), complete with an outdoor dining area, gazebo, and *fingers crossed* hottub.
- Badmitten!!
- Sunbathing (with sunblock, of course)
- BBQ's galore - and entertaining friends and family
- Tons of music events
- Camping!!
Oh I could go on and on....

I don't even know where to start with this last weekend. It was wonderful in many ways, but mostly because it was just so relaxed.
I'm becoming increasingly in love with my kitchen, and finding that very often throughout the day I sort of crave to spend time there. This has made it a little difficult for me to get on line over the last few days, well, because when I'm home I just don't want to leave my kitchen.
Yesterday I had every intention to get outside and go for a day trip with Lucy up to Ferndale (as mentioned in a recent previous post), but due to the very windy weather, and an unexpected cold front (in spite of the damn sunshine) I knew it wasn't going to happen. I just HATE going outside when it's super windy, and that's one of the annoyances of living on the coast of northern california. Sooo, I stayed in my kitchen --- allllll dayyyy longgg. And it was SO awesome. Before I new it, it was time for dinner, and I had been chopping, dicing, mincing, grating, and prancing around my kitchen for six hours. Needless to say I've got a few things to show off...but where to start?

The other day I had a weird craving for a cooked meal that I use to eat a lot of. Embarassingly simple, a sort of poor-man's dinner: Brown Rice and Cabbage. After thinking about it for a while I knew that I could recreate the rice and cabbage meal with a rawfood twist...so I did. The end result is something I'd like to call:
"Poor Man's Brown "rice" and Cabbage", with a Cucumber Avocado salad.
Recipe and another pic, this way... )
Next up is another variation of my raw breakfast bars - but this time they're TROPICAL!! And so much better than before. Mango/Banana/Kiwi Tropical Breakfast Bars with a Coconut-Lemon cream icing/filling.
This way for the recipe and pics... )
And finally, a very simple but yummy snack. I share a picture of it because while I was snacking in the sunlight of our sun-room my plate just looked too pretty. Cucumber Sticks (w/ a little sea salt), Carrot Chips, and "Raw no-chickpea Hummus" topped with Sunflower Parm and Paprika.
This way for a pic and link to recipe... )Thanks so much for stopping by! And I promise that there's much more to come!
xoxo~
sarahfae: (le sigh)

So far this weekend is turning out to be a lovely one.

This morning I woke up reeeeally early with D (6:30 - that's way too early for the weekend). He went to work and I actually got out of bed, went for a quick 1 mile run, did an hour of pilates, cleaned up around the house, and ate a yummy breakfast .
By the time breakfast was in my belly I realized that the day was flying by, and it was almost time to head over to the ball park to watch my friends two boys play their baseball game. Sadly the mini-Dodgers lost to the mini- Orioles, but it was fun to cheer them on (even though I didn't get to stay for the whole game).
One of my favorite things to do is watch kids sports durning the summer time. I just LOVE to cheer for them and watch the serious expressions on their little faces. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited to see the mini-Dodgers play another game. It's also pretty awesome that they're representing mine and D's favorite team --- even if they lose again, it's okay with me.

After the ball game I met up with D and did some grocery shopping (I am so in love with the produce isle), and then to home to relax for a while.

At the moment I'm wearing my black-pink-and leopard-print apron, sipping on a big mug of green tea, there's a TON of food in the dehydrator, and I'm waiting for my sundried tomatoes to finish tenderizing (they're soaking in some warm water) so I can embark on a very exciting kitchen adventure: tonight's dinner! I think it's going to be really good too.

Tonight D's band has a show at the Alibi, so if you're in the neighborhood please come by and say hello! I'll be the girl at the merch table.

sarahfae: (Default)
And we have NO plans!
D has to work a ton of extra hours. Boo!
What am I gonna do with myself? I'm thinking about taking a day trip with Lucy to Ferndale. I've been wanting to just wander around that town and take pictures --- and D's never been the "just wandering" type. Oooh...I could dress up even! And Lucy could dress up with me! And we could have a picnic out at Centerville Beach! This is sounding like a fun idea now.
Yay for the weekend!

I whacked all of my bangs off the other day. They were growing in sort of sideways, and driving me bonkers --- so I evened them out...I like 'em a lot more now.

sarahfae: (dear diary)

So the weekend – last weekend – it was nice.

On Saturday D and I woke up a little later then originally planned, so we didn’t get to head up to Trinidad to look for whales and have breakfast at the Eatery. Instead we slowly got everything ready for our day trip/caravan (with family) to Klamath.

While not everything went as planned (we should’ve taken D’s truck instead of my car, because the roads we found ourselves exploring were verrrry rough) it turned out to be a nice time, going to various scenic look-out points along the 101. Around 3-ish we all decided to go into Crescent City and check out Ocean World. I’d never been there, and every time D and were in the area it was closed. What followed was a very silly and fun family outing.

What I learned about myself through this trip is that I am prone to kissing inadament objects in photos. I never realized this until my Mom said something while I was trying to lay a smooch on the cheek of a large skeleton-pirate statue. I’m really okay with this though. I think it’s perfectly fine and healthy for a married woman such as myself to go around flirting with non-threatening lifeless objects. The exception to this (of course) is just about any animal, and maybe an occasional baby.

At any rate – here’s some silly pictures from our trip.

On a different note, I’ve been feeling so wonderfully happy over the last few days --- a strange sort of blissed out high. All areas of my life seem to be simple and yet wonderful. Simplicity is great. As I become more of a home-body and less of a social-butterfly (D and I still love to go out) some of my most favorite things to do are revolved around the kitchen, and music. Thanks to a wealth of new support I think I should be ready fairly soon to make some much needed changes to my lj page…making the focus primarily on food, recipes, and healthy happy living.

A few questions ran through my mind this morning that I wanted to ask anyone who might frequently read what I write. Please answer them if you feel like it! I’d love to get to know my lj friends better.

Here are the questions, with my answers:

What activities make you really happy? Running. Sitting on the couch with my hubby and having a good conversation. Hula-hooping in my back yard with friends, or family.

What part of the day are you most happy? I think in the morning – after my shower – when I get to wake up Lucy with kisses and feed her breakfast. Then, when I get home in the afternoon, to get hugs from my sweetie, and go for a run. This is subject to change though :)

What small “thing” or part of your daily routine to you truly enjoy? This is a hard one…I’ve really been enjoying getting my breakfast and lunch ready every day before I go to work. Also – my daily run(go figure), and the morning stretching that I’ve gotten in the habit of is sort of nice too.

This weekend that is precisely what D and I will be doing...chasing the sunshine.
Right now we're torn between a trip down south to go whale watching in Mendocino, a trip up north with some of my family to discover more of Klamath (not super exciting, but it'd be nice to spend some time with the fam), or a trip even further up north to hang out on Harris Beach in Brookings. I think in the end it'll all depend on where the warm sunny weather is --- I'm dying to soak up some vitamin D (with sunscreen on, of course).

One thing I've learned throughout the change in my diet, and phasing back into eating mostly rawfood is how important preparation is! Prep, prep, prep. I've been prepping SO much! If I don't prep my meals ahead of time (usually once a week for the bulk of things, and every night for my following lunch) then I either don't eat, or eat really crappy icky food that makes me feel awful after wards.
I've also learned that reusable food storage containers have become one of my favorite things in the world. It's been my saving grace every single day that I take lunch to work with me, and whenever we're out for the day. I have a great lunch box/cooler that I can put an ice pack in, and all of my food stays nice and chilled while we're out on our adventures.
I'm trying to get rid of all of my plastic containers (which I have a lot of) and build up a collection of glass, stainless steel, and bento boxes. It's fun to eat my lunch out of a hello kitty container, but a pretty glass jar is so much more eco-friendly. For how I've recruited D to set aside any (empty) larger in size glass containers that he comes across while at work (he's one of the managers at our nat.foods store). I'd really like to pick up a couple of these in the near future too.

Happy Friday! And...
sarahfae: (Default)
Oh my this weekend was a busy one! It's amazing how productive one can be when you're stuck inside all weekend. It was hailing non-stop Saturday night and all Day Sunday, and naturally the weather was crisp and clear when I woke up this morning. *Edit: Apparently there's another big cold front (with storm in tow) heading in this evening.

I have SO many yummy *raw food* stories to tell, and at least couple of recipes to share...
All of which will have to wait until I get off of work and make time to upload the pics from my camera. For now I'll just have to tease you with this thought...Cheesy Spicy Kale Chips...I have created the answer to all of my SAD food cravings.

Musically I had a very wonderful burst of creativity, and wrote a really well structured song...I'm seriously proud of it. Hopefully I'll have a recording of it sometime within the next few months.

Why???

Things have been nothing short of CRAYZAY as of late...but in a weird sort of way I guess it's a good thing.

The weekend was spent enjoying our new-found friendship with B and C (such a fun couple), eating sushi, listening to good music, watching the Dodgers beat the Cubs (Fuck yeah!), watching the 49er's loose to the Patriots (boo!), watching the very akward, and sort-of-silly movie "Harold", and an incredibly moving documentary called "For the Bible tells me so" .
...I think it was an all around successful two and a half days.

Right now D and I are wide awake in our spare bedroom (aka: the computer-room) because it's so humid outside. We've got every single window open (that will open) in our house, and we're both sipping on cold beers....neither one of us tired in the least bit. Blech.

See you soon...

sarahfae: (chatty)

I woke up this morning to blue sky---blue sky and 70 degree weather! Such a nice change from a hazy smokey sky. So after tussling around with Lucy for a bit I got out of bed and started to prep for the family barbe-que that was to take place at the Mom's house.
I had to flake on farmers market, and go the route of ENF (Eureka Natural Foods) for groceries, mainly because of our/D's 25% employee discount (jokingly I always tell him it's the reason why I married him in the first place). While I'm huge on supporting local farmers, time constraints enevitably won this weekend. *sad face*

Right now I'm just relaxing on the sofa, sipping on a glass of emergen-c, and listening to Ol' Blue Eyes sing "The Girl From Eponema"...one my favorite renditions. SJ is going to be here around 8pm, and from there we're going to play dress-up, and walk over the the Lil' Red Lion to check out the Zombie film-show that's suppose to take place around 10. Care to join us?

And now for some pictures...a habit that I've gotten into as of late, and I'm rather enjoying. Hope you are too...

I've been listening to some of my old mixed CD's as of late - and my favorite ones are the "Golden Oldies" from the war-time era...Johnny Mathis, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Andy Williams...and early Frank.
If you've never listened to the McGuire Sisters - well, you're missing out! I couldn't find them singing "Blue Room" (which is my personal fav), but "No More" is just as good... I will never get tired of listening to this kind of music as long as I live.
sarahfae: (Laundry)
What an amazingly beautiful Saturday.
73 degree weather brought us to Trinidad this early afternoon - we had a yummy brunch at the Eatery, and took Lucy down to the head for a frolic. I think the beach will be a regular hangout for us this summer, and I'm not complaining about it.

D and I have been working on Lucy's command responses when we take her places, and one of the more funnier ways we've been doing this is when we take her to the ocean.
If you've ever seen a little dog run through an uneven plain then you know how cute is it to watch them frolic like mini deer - over grass and sand dunes. I can't help but laugh at their tiny leaps and bounds. It's pretty cute to say the least.
So, what we've been doing is...
D will take off running in one direction, and I'll either stay put, or run the opposite direction.
Lucy will follow the first one who starts running.
When D and I both stop we take turns calling Lucy to us - and boy does she haul ass!!

The reason for this little story you ask?
I took pictures....and I couldn't lead into showing them without some sort of explanation....

First here she is checking out her doggy shadow...

And the day is not over yet....

After a long and exhausting weekend...my shins hurt from all of the walking we did during the Jazz Fest.
It was so nice to hang out with B and H, and drink, dance, eat, and drink and dance some more. However, Lavay was a *huge* dissapointment - laking stage presence, the ability to dance, and pretty much fading away into the awesomeness that was her seven piece big band - the only good thing about her performance. I was not impressed.
On the other hand, Steve Lucky and the Rumba Bums were great. If they ever make their way through your town, see them.

And here's a cute picture of part of my little happy family....

sarahfae: (drink time)
Getting ready to go see my sweetie play a show at the Alibi tonight, with butt-rockers Machete. It's gonna be a loud, fun, and very packed crowd. I'll most likely just grab a seat somewhere behind the ruckus and sip on a glass of wine. There may be an after party at the boys practice space - which could be dangerous, but I'm sort of hoping for it to happen.

Work is wonderful! But I hesitate to jump around for joy just yet - I guess I just want to settle in a bit more before I make a full analysis of it all. So far so good though - and I think I'm finally on a path to becoming a happier healthier working version of myself. The group inhabiting the NCJ office are the colorful and laid back sort - my type of people completely. In fact, one my my new co-workers E, is gonna meet up with me at the show this evening. I like her alot - not to mention she's pretty cute too. But I digress.

In music news:
I've been playing the piano very regularly (at least a half an hour every day), and I'm really happy with the out come of it. I've currently got three unfinished songs, with a fourth surfacing tonight. D is stealing his 4track back from his brother, so my next project will be learning how to use it.

Love,
Sarahfae

Wow. The last few days have been nothing short of crazy.
At the moment I'm sitting in the peace and quiet of our messy home, not wanting to do anything but listen to myself breathe. I'm a little bit down today too. No reason in particular - most likely I'm just crashing from a very busy weekend.
Thursday night was D's birthday, so we met up with six of our friends and had Tepanyaki at The Ritz. After wards we headed over to the Shanty for some cocktails - and ended up staying out much later than planned.

Friday I cleaned the house for most of the morning, went shopping with Jen, and in the evening had an impromptu birthday party for D - about eighteen friends showed up for that - and lots of Sangria was consumed by yours truly.

Last night we met up with Jen at the Pearl for a quick drink, and after wards D and I were treated to the latest play at the NCRT - "Marat/Sade" (thank you Todd&Laura!). I was really stoked to finally Josh perform, and pleasantly surprised to see my old friend Silas on the stage as well. I would definitely see this play again - and highly recomend it!

Now we're off to watch the game at Brillo and Lyndsey's.
Tomorrow I officially start my new job! Hootie-hoo!
I'm excited!
